Wing had very graciously offered to store my stuff for me until I got back, but I felt pretty uneasy about imposing on him. So I decided to just get some storage space. Turns out I had so little stuff, that all I needed was a "locker" (4x4x5) which was quite affordable. However, the idea of leaving my stuff alone for months in a locker defended only by a small padlock made me really uneasy. I know a lot of people do it, but a lot of people don't know about "lock bumping".
3 min video: Lock Bumping on the news
As you can see, anyone with a set of bump keys can open about 90% of locks in a matter of seconds. SECONDS! I did some additional research and found that only a handful of lock brands, namely Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Schlage's Primus and Master's Bumpsafe line, claim any degree of bump protection. Unsurprisingly, none of them were available at Home Depot or Lowe's Hardware. So I just picked up a beefy "contractor-grade" lock and hoped that the bad guys overlook my little locker for the next few months.
Anyway, there are a few important things I'd like Wing to hang onto, like my Wii, so I drive over at 8pm to drop it off. He's very surprised that I didn't take him up on his offer and convinces me to cancel my locker, showing me how much room he has. I thank him profusely and return home to pack up my stuff up asap.
It took quite a while for me to get the boxes into my car because I didn't have any help. I got a sense of how the ancient Egyptians must have felt building the pyramids without power tools. But with just my handy red roller and a lot of elbow grease, I managed to wrangle all 8 boxes downstairs in one trip. Now my hatchback has never EVER let me down with its storage capacity, and this time was no different. I figured a way to pack everything in the car and slowly rolled back to Wing's. So crazy. One carload holding my entire net worth. Still too much!
After a bit more heavy lifting, I FINALLY get a chance to just breathe and spend some QT on Wing's couch. I really wish we could have hung out more while I was here, but the combination of his job, having a gf, and living up in the boonies made spontaneously getting together kinda tough. But I really credit him with always coming out for events with enough notice.
So it was nice just to kick back and geek out for awhile. We mainly talked about how happy he was with his new 120 Hz TV. According to him (and the internets) 120Hz refresh rate is the new hotness to have on your TV. As I understand it, because it's divisible by both 24 (film quality) and 30 (tv), it is free to interpolate interstitial frames without resorting to motion blur or frame doubling. Unfortunately, after 30 minutes of trying to demo the difference for me with a splitscreen, I still couldn't tell which was which. Heck, I can barely even make out what's HD and what isn't. Oh well.
Thanks for hangin out and storing my stuff, Wing. I feel really bad I won't be in town to help celebrate your bday :( t - 2 days
