After yesterday's setback of losing 17 entries, I spent the next 24 hours trying to undo the damage. I tried a LOT of things, but I found the following techniques the most helpful:
1. Google cache: Google keeps a copy of almost every page on the internet. If you act quick enough, you can grab a copy of your lost page before Google crawls it again. Just Google for your pages with the CACHE: operator:
ie.
cache:www.densetsu.net/chrono/index.php?day=20070501
2. Your browser's cache: I use Firefox so instead of simply going to Temporary Internet files folder, you'll have to use a browser addon like
CacheViewer. You will see the exact page your browser saw last.
Anyway with these two tools, I managed to get 12 of 17 entries back. Just make sure to check your cache BEFORE you try to access the lost pages again. If I knew that before I started, I would have gotten all 17 out of 17 : Ahh well, lesson learned. I spent the rest of the day re-writing the missing 5 entries, including my monster
Spider-man 3 review, which was REALLY rancorous the first time.
Vanessa rolled her virtual eyes at me and asked why I didn't just forget those entries, and just start again from right now instead of backfilling past entries as I've been doing. I agree that it's kinda OCD of me, but I feel that is just something I need to do for my own happiness. I spend most of my time alone, so if no one but me experienced it, and I don't remember it, then it might as well have never happened. Also, this is how I absorb the events of the day and try to find some sort of lesson to be learned. Another reason is it gently pushes me into pushing myself to have new experiences when opportunities arise. eg. Should I go play tourguide to these German girls, or should I stay home and eat ramen? I think "Hmm, what would make for a better entry?". Lastly it's really therapeutic. Once I write about something bad that happened, I seem to let go of that pain. eg. The second time I wrote the Spider-man review, I just wasn't as angry :) Over the years, I believe I've really mellowed out due to the slow release. In any case, chronicling makes me feel good. So there.
I also spent sometime fiddling with my database, doublechecking my data integrity to make sure it didn't screw up future entries.
And I finally took the time to write a [better] backup system. Now I keep the last 4 changes backed up, just in case. A ton of work accomplished! It's nice to finally be productive again. In fact, I was so busy, I barely finished just in time to realize it was time to go pick up my mom from the airport! Oh yeah, that's right, she's coming to town!
