I foresee that this short essay will soon be the most often [mis]quoted opinion piece re: online social networks.
Hegemonic American teens (i.e. middle/upper class, college bound teens from upwards mobile or well off families) are all on or switching to Facebook. Marginalized teens, teens from poorer or less educated backgrounds, subculturally-identified teens, and other non-hegemonic teens continue to be drawn to MySpace.
If you are on any network, I really recommend reading the full essay. The internet is starting to self-divide. I'm worried that this is the precursor to an age where the online experience starts to reflect and reinforce real life discrimination and inequities.
Eg.
"Oh, you have a hotmail account? Statistically, that means you probably have bad credit, so you don't qualify to buy this product online."
Better to be aware now than boiled alive later :/
