Friday night... As one of the last single guys standing, Wing had tasked me with finding a place for him to impress his girlfriend Hanh with a night of dancing. There's added pressure because 2 other couples that I rarely/never see (Linathan and Wence [Gren?]) are also coming out. I suggested
Bartop at Rouge, since it's fancy (velvet seats and chandeliers), yet scandalous (at around 12:30, girls start dancing on top of the bar [ergo Bartop]), plus they play a decent spread of music and the crowd is relatively non-assgrabby. So I spend some time and start adding fake email addresses for each of them to the guestlist so they can get in for free before 11.
I'm just tinkering around online later when old friend Mary pops up on IM. She coincidentally promotes for Bartop now, so she asks if I was coming out tonight. I proudly let her know that I had already dutifully placed myself and 6 more on the guest list. She chuckled and said, oh you don't wanna be on THAT list... then offered to put us all on the "good" guest list, so we could get in for free before 12. I thank her, and explained how much this helped, since Wing still had to pick up Hanh from the airport at 9:30. With the extra hour, there would be no rush for them.
Wouldn't you know it, about half an hour later, just as I'm about to leave for happy hour at EZ5, Mary calls me up and asks if I'd be interested in getting a private booth for Wing. I let her know that I couldn't afford the VIP treatment, but she says not to worry, she was hooking us up, him being an out of town guest and all. I thanked her profusely, and excitedly let the gang know we would be living the high life at Rouge. My initial group was just supposed to be me plus the 3 couples, but once word got around of the luxury to be had, the party doubled. The more the merrier! I think my mission of making sure Wing had a good time surpassed all my expectations. In fact, later in the night, Mary even sent our table a complimentary bottle of champagne! Bonus points! Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, but we took some good snaps of the night on Grace's. Anyway, I had a few drinks, made sure the 3 couples were all set and dancing, then made my surreptitious exit.
I went to meet up with Tan and Derrick who were out with a group of 5 girls from San Diego. They had tried to go to some club, but apparently it wasn't any good, so I met them at a nearby dive bar. We decided to go visit Derrick's girlfriend at the bar she tended. Along the way, I think someone mentioned that the girls hadn't had enough to drink yet. We bought a bottle of grey goose (classy), and took turns chugging as much as we could walking down the street (scandalous).
Once again, I felt it was my gentlemanly duty to drink more than my share to help the girls out. By the time we reached the bar, I think everyone was pretty giggly. In fact, when I found out the bar had happy hour chinese food left over, I surrendered to my munchies and apparently became known as "the antisocial fried rice guy". Ahh, Friday was down, just one more day of partying to survive to go.
