Wing Thursday

I'll soon be leaving for a 3 week trip to Vancouver where I plan to rest up and get back into coding mode, so I figure now is the time to get my partying out of the way. I kinda went out the night before, but tonight is when I actually had legit, true blue plans.

The night starts out with Ward and I meeting up with some friends at Amelie, a new wine bar on Polk. It might have been a bit too swanky for us [ie. you guys at a wine bar? ur kidding right?], but apparently it was the new hot place to go. It was nice, but we only had time for one drink before bouncing to pick up Wing, the guest of honor from his downtown hotel.

From there, we go up to Sausalito to attend a recruitment party for Grouper, Ward's old company. He was happy to bump into his old coworkers, and I was pleased to catch up with some old buddies from the AOL days. Even Wing bumped into someone he knew from Seattle. Besides the open bar, the highlight of the night was the crazy marching band that performed in the middle of the fancy restaurant. It was... raucous. There was a dude on a megaphone, one flag bearer in hot pants, a bunch of "extreme" cheerleaders and a load of tattooed horn blowers and drummers. Sexy time!

After enjoying the view of San Francisco from Sausalito, we drive back to town where Wing takes us to one of his game industry parties. The one we go to is at the W hotel where each company takes over a suite, and you spend the night hopping between each mini-party. As expected, it's all guys, so we do our best to collect free stuff and avoid grumbling at the 10 dollar drinks. I ran into old buddy Johnny, who I knew back from my contracting days at Google. It was really kind of a surprise to see him stumbling around at a video game party. Turns out he had friends in the industy, and like us was here for the overpriced booze. At that point, things get a bit hazy.

Somehow, I found my way back to 1984. Apparently, I still wanted to go out, but Ward and Wing had places to be the next day. So, they dropped me off at Cat Club to wait for some friends to join me. The night is kind of a blur, I'm sure glad I have the pictures to prove I had a good time. Piecing things together, apparently we all got some Vietnamese food at 3am near my house, then I stayed up till 6 or 7 am on the phone with Nhien who just got back to Switzerland. Happy Wing Thursday!
