Idiocracy

After getting my annual dose of Vegas, I return to San Francisco to recuperate. I'm happy that I have this movie waiting for me.

I find it kinda ironic that Idiocracy, a cautionary tale about the dumbing down of the world, comes to us from Mike Judge, of Beavis and Butthead fame. I guess after Office Space and years of King of the Hill, he's reached a certain level of street cred that allows him to turn his back on the behemoth of stupidity that he spawned 15 yrs earlier.

The premise is simple and easy to see even today. Dumb people mate and reproduce way faster than smart people. Thus, smart genes get passed on less and less and the average IQ of the world has dropped to moronic levels. Consequently, in this movie, average guy Luke Wilson finds himself waking up 500 years in the future where he is now the smartest man in the world. Here's an example of a "hard question" from their IQ test: "You have one bucket filled with 5 gallons of water, and one bucket filled with 3 gallons of water... How many buckets do you have?"

I kinda wish this movie was released in theaters. But after watching it, you can see that there's no way that distributor Fox could have hyped it in good conscience, since it's incredibly anti-corporation (read, anti-sponsor). In the future, Starbucks offers handjobs, you can get a law degree at Costco, Carl's Jr's slogan is "Fuck you, I'm eating", and Brawndo (Gatorade) is at fault for the world's economy problems, oh and Fox, the movie's distributor, puts out a show called "Ow, my balls".

Check it out. It's like 1984 where Big Brother is really really stupid. Ahh, if only people listened. :(
