So it's only been 2 days in Vegas, when I notice a distinct losing trend. And when I say distinct, I mean to say, catastrophic. I've never ever, EVER lost this badly so quickly on a gambling trip. Usually, through conservative betting and solid statistical blackjack, I can survive on about a hundred bucks per day, getting a free drink about every half hour. Sometimes, I even come out a bit ahead. On this trip, at every single attempt, I would burn through my initial wad in about 15 minutes, being knocked out before I could even order a drink. It got to the point that I actually noticed a streak where I lost 20 hands in a row. It was unnatural. Was fate telling me I shouldn't be gambling? I checked later, and my two horoscopes for the year DID suggest not pushing my luck for awhile:
Snake - Year of the Fire Pig
The snake will find that he has not been invited to the pig's table. This year is a time of quiet for the snake to lie coiled and waiting for the rat year that will bring a new wave of good fortune. You may enjoy the company of friends and family, but successful results in business will be limited. It is not a good time to begin new ventures or to challenge decisions. Avoid conflicts... they will not bring good outcomes with the opposite pig sign ruling this year. The snake should enjoy home, food and limited travel while planning for the much better prospects coming when the opposing pig sign is no longer dominant. The rat and ox years ahead promise that this next 12 year cycle will be good to the patient snake who gathers resources and plans to move when the time is right.
Scorpio - 2007: (taken off a novelty card from the Google holiday party)
Great prosperity can be yours so long as you keep your actions steady and purposeful. This is especially so in March, April and May when a significant opportunity or investment in your career will pay handsome dividends by September. Keep in mind though that resisting the "urge to splurge" is vital unless it contributes to a longer term goal. Areas of useful study include your own value system in addition to finances and investment. Saturn remains in your career zone until September, so make the best of this time learning to shine in your own right at an individual. It then begins to challenge your ability to bring your gifts together with others to achieve larger humanitarian goals.
Pretty bleak, eh? Ok, so horoscopes are an occasional guilty pleasure of mine, but I don't depend on them for anything. And I'm definitely not superstitious to the extent that some people can be absolute
fatalists. I remember an old friend who tried to convince me that there was no need for her to even leave the house, or try to look good or be nice to people, since her Prince Charming was out there destined to hunt her down and seduce her. She smugly judged my lifestyle of actually going out and meeting people to be "a waste of money and time". Nope. I think that you make your own destiny. Carpe Diem, right? It's up to me to make the most (or least) of the opportunities that are presented to me. No one else to depend on or to blame.
Instant Update: Sherryl of "my car" fame just sent me my horoscope for today. How relevant! Thanks, Sher!
Scorpio - Tuesday, March 13th, 2007 PST
Something in your life is about to change for the better, but you have to participate in the process. You can unconsciously hold on to the way things were, for what you know seems less frightening than what you don't know. Ultimately, Scorpio is the sign of transformation. You have the power, so don't hold back; let the magic happen.
Back at the ranch, when you look at it from a purely empirical standpoint, if we're all "destined" for something, then shouldn't there be more miracles that keep us alive long enough to fulfill it? If that were the case, no one would need to work, because money and food would magically appear when needed, and we wouldn't need to wear seatbelts because hey, destiny won't let us die without accomplishing whatever lofty goal we've determined for ourselves. Even if not everyone had such a magical destiny, in a world of 6 (7?) billion people, don't you think we would regularly hear of people who just can't be killed. Off the top of my head, I can only think of two such people: Rasputin and Detective John McClane. If I'm wrong, then movies like "
Intacto" and "
The Cooler" would be documentaries, and not awesome bits of fiction. Ehh, either way, doesn't get me my money back. Stupid Vegas.
