Dinner with the Wards

Tonight, I've been invited to dinner with Jon, my roommate from 2000 - 2005, and his wife Linh. He moved out to get married at about the same time I started work at Google. I rib him a little for now only hanging out with other couples, which he can't deny. Truth is I miss the guy; from 5 years of daily contact to once every 6 months is a major step down.

Anyway, I was happy to hear from Jon again. He gave me a call a few weeks back to ask if I wanted to buy his old DS chip which would allow me to err... play homebrew games. Since I've been away, tonight was the first chance we got to make the exchange. When I get there, he lets me know I could just have it for free, so I gladly offered to buy dinner in return. It was a pleasant night, we caught up, and played video games just like old times.

But he had an ulterior motive. Jon also wanted to talk about a pet project of his, that he thought I might be interested in working on. It wasn't really in my field of expertise, but I thought it actually had a lot of merit. I told him I'd be willing to work on it, but it would have to wait a few months, until my web voodoo training is complete. I told him that I was very touched that he trusted me enough to share his secret [million-dollar] idea with me.

And I think this is even more proof that I'm on the right track. This isn't the first conversation I've had that started with a "Hey Denny, I dunno if you'd be interested, but I have this idea that could be really cool." Hearing a friend talk about their idea, with all their excitement and apprehension, then being in a position to help bring that idea to life, is incredibly gratifying to me. I think I could do it for the rest of my life. Wish me luck!
